The Illusion of Self-Sufficiency In a world that prizes the “self-made” individual, we like to believe that we are the sole authors of our wisdom. we think our degrees, our books, and our logical minds are what keep us on the right path. However, how many brilliant people do we see making destructive choices? Intelligence is a tool, but it isn’t a compass. Without a “north star,” even the smartest person can end up lost in the dark.
The Concept of Hidayah In Islamic terminology, guidance is called Hidayah. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Hidayah is the direction or guidance provided by the Creator to lead humans to the truth. The Quran reminds us that “You do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills.” This teaches us humility. We realize that our faith and our good choices are not reasons for arrogance, but reasons for profound gratitude (Shukr).
The Light of the Heart: Nur Guidance is often described as Nur (light). When the Creator grants someone Hidayah, it is as if a lamp has been lit inside their chest. Suddenly, they see through the illusions of the world. They recognize what is truly valuable versus what is temporary. This isn’t just an intellectual “knowing”; it is a deep, spiritual “seeing.” This light is what allows a person to navigate the Fitnah (trials/tribulations) of life without losing their way.
The Peace of Being Led Realizing that guidance is a gift brings a deep sense of Sakina (tranquillity). You stop feeling the pressure to be the “god” of your own life. You move from a state of anxious searching to a state of Tawakkul (trust). Your daily prayer becomes a sincere request: “Guide us to the straight path.” This request is an admission that you need help, and in that admission, you find your greatest strength. You are no longer wandering alone; you are being led by al-Hadi (The Guide).
