The Habit of Heedlessness We spend most of our lives staring at screens or caught up in the “noise” of our own thoughts. We walk past wonders every day without seeing them. This state of Ghaflah (heedlessness) makes our world feel small, mechanical, and stressful. When we forget to look at the “Big Picture,” we become trapped in the tiny details of our daily struggles, losing the sense of wonder that keeps the human spirit alive.
The Concept of Tafakkur In Islamic tradition, the act of deep contemplation is called Tafakkur. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Tafakkur is the intellectual and spiritual process of pondering over the signs of the Creator in the universe. The Quran encourages this constantly, asking us to look at the stars, the rain, and the diversity of our own languages. It tells us that in the creation of the heavens and the earth, there are Ayat (signs) for people of understanding.
From Observation to Tasbih The goal of reflection is to reach a state of Tasbih (Glorification). When you study the precise balance of the atmosphere or the incredible design of the human eye, the logical conclusion of the heart is: Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah). You realize that nothing in this universe is random or purposeless. By recognizing the greatness of the Khaliq (Creator), you naturally develop Khushu’ (humility). You see that the One who manages the orbits of the planets is more than capable of managing your life.
The Serenity of the Awestruck Heart Living with a habit of reflection brings a profound sense of Sakina (tranquillity). It is a form of “spiritual perspective-taking.” When you glorify the Divine, your personal problems are put into their proper context. You find Rida (contentment) because you trust the Wisdom behind the design of your life just as much as you trust the design of the universe. This makes you Thabit (steadfast); you are no longer easily shaken by the winds of change because you are anchored in the Majesty of the Eternal.
