Islam teaches that before a person advises others to be good, they must first look at their own behavior. Real leadership and parenting are built on example, not just instructions.

The Problem with “Do As I Say”
We all know how frustrating it is when someone gives advice they do not follow. Think about a boss who demands you be on time but shows up late. Or a parent who yells at their child to stop shouting.

It feels fake. It feels empty. This is because words without action have no power.

The Ancient Question
In the very first section of the Quran, there is a powerful question asked to humanity:
“Do you command people to virtuous conduct, and forget yourselves?”

This is a warning against hypocrisy. It reminds us that a holy book or a moral code is not just something you quote to win an argument. It is a mirror. It is meant to keep you in check before you try to correct anyone else.

What is “Virtuous Conduct”?
The Arabic word used for “virtuous conduct” in this lesson is Birr. In the glossary of Islamic terms, Birr is defined simply as kindness, gentle behavior, and having deep care for others.

So, the lesson is simple: You cannot demand kindness if you are acting harshly. You cannot demand respect if you are not showing it. You cannot teach peace if you are acting with anger.

Applying This to Your Life
This week, try the “Mirror Test.” Before you criticize a partner, correct a child, or complain about a coworker, stop for one second. Ask yourself: “Am I doing the same thing?”

If the answer is yes, fix yourself first. Your example will be much louder than your words.

Let’s Talk About It
Living with integrity is hard work. We often feel like we are failing our own standards.

Do you want to learn more about how to match your actions with your values?
