However, the Quran invites us to look outward at the universe itself. From the vastness of the galaxies to the microscopic detail of a cell, the world is filled with “signs” that point toward a greater purpose and a magnificent Creator. To walk through the world without noticing these signs is like walking through a library with your eyes closed.

The Concept of Ayat In Islamic teaching, the word for a verse in the Quran is Ayah (plural: Ayat). Interestingly, the Glossary of Islamic Terms defines Ayah not just as a “verse,” but as a “sign” or a “miracle.” The Quran uses the same word to describe the verses of the scripture and the phenomena of nature. This means that the rain, the mountains, and the changing of the seasons are all “verses” in a physical book of revelation. They are signs of the Khaliq (The Creator) designed to wake up our hearts.

The Power of Tafakkur The act of deeply thinking about these signs is called Tafakkur. The glossary defines Tafakkur as “reflection” or “contemplation.” It is a form of worship that doesn’t require words. When you practice Tafakkur, you move beyond the surface of things. You don’t just see a tree; you see the wisdom in its growth, the mercy in its fruit, and the power in its resilience. This reflection leads to Yaqin (certainty) and a deep sense of Hamd (gratitude).

Connecting the Heart and Mind The goal of pondering the signs is to reach a state of Ma’rifa, which the glossary describes as “deep knowledge” or “gnosis.” It is the moment when intellectual observation turns into a spiritual experience. Recognizing the order and beauty in the universe brings a sense of Sakina (tranquillity) because it reminds us that we are part of a balanced and purposeful creation. We realize that if the Creator can manage the stars, He can certainly manage our affairs.

Let’s Find the Path Together At Rahmah-Dialog, we believe that rediscovering a sense of wonder is key to a healthy spiritual life.
