However, Islamic teaching warns us of a “clear enemy” who doesn’t use physical force, but psychological tactics. This influence doesn’t usually tell you to “do evil” directly; instead, it uses your own fears, desires, and insecurities to nudge you away from your best self. It is a constant attempt to disturb your peace and distance you from your purpose.

The Tactics of Khid’a The word for “deception” or “manipulation” in this context is often related to Khid’a. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, this involves trickery or misguidance. One of the most common ways the Shaytan (Devil) manipulates us is by making us feel “spiritually poor.” He promises us that if we are generous, we will become poor, or if we are honest, we will lose out. This manipulation of our Khawf (fear) is designed to make us act out of desperation rather than trust.

Identifying the “Whisper” The primary tool of manipulation is Waswasa, or whispering. The glossary defines this as the hidden suggestions that enter the mind. The key to breaking the manipulation is Dhikr (remembrance). When you are aware of the Creator, you become a “witness” to your own thoughts. You start to notice: “Is this thought coming from my values, or is it a manipulation designed to make me angry/sad/arrogant?” This awareness is part of Taqwa, which keeps you “on guard.”

Reclaiming Your Inner Peace The goal of this manipulation is to take away your Sakina (tranquillity). A manipulated person is easy to provoke and easy to discourage. But once you realize that the “enemy” only has the power that you give him, the game changes. By seeking Isti’adha (refuge in the Creator), you step out of the manipulation and back into your own power. You realize that your Qalb (heart) belongs to you and your Lord, not to any external influence.

Let’s Find the Path Together At Rahmah-Dialog, we believe that understanding the psychology of temptation and manipulation is the first step toward freedom.
