In the “Tree of Faith,” the branch of “Avoiding Intoxicants” represents the “Secure Fortress”; it protects the jewel of the mind from decay and loss. God described intoxicants as “defilement from the work of Satan” and commanded their avoidance, so that the believer remains in full awareness and alertness, ready for intimate discourse with their Lord and to fulfill their trust on earth with a sound heart and an upright mind.

Avoiding intoxicants in Islam is a “Victory for Rationality.” A true believer refuses to surrender the most distinguishing characteristic of their humanity—consciousness—for a fleeting, false pleasure that leaves only regret. They are certain that intoxicants are the key to all evil and that every servant is accountable for every grain of their awareness.

The Philosophy of Prohibition: “Defilement from the Work of Satan, So Avoid It”

Revelation has formulated a methodology that preserves human dignity and safety, resting on firm spiritual pillars:

Venerating the Blessing of the Intellect: Intoxicants cover the mind and dispel reason. Islam came to elevate the human being, not to let them descend to the level of those who do not perceive their actions. A rational believer leads their desires; their desires do not lead them.

Closing the Doors to Immorality and Sins: Intoxicants are called “The Mother of Wickedness” because when the mind is gone, one emboldens themselves to commit adultery, murder, injustice, and the severing of family ties. Its prohibition is a “general prevention” for society against all evils that sprout in the absence of consciousness.

Preserving the Connection with Allah: Worship requires the presence of the heart and an understanding of what is recited. Intoxicants sever this connection and leave the servant in a state of wandering and misguidance. Thus, the believer flees from it so their tongue remains moist with the remembrance of God and their mind stays cognizant of their Creator’s greatness.

Requirements of Character: The Demeanor of the Pure and Upright Believer

This branch manifests in a believer’s conduct, making them a role model in sobriety and dignity:

Total Avoidance of Every Intoxicant: A believer approaches neither a small nor a large amount of intoxicants. They are wary of anything that clouds the mind under any name, adhering to the Prophetic rule: “Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, a small amount of it is forbidden,” ensuring their heart remains pure and their body clean.

Staying Away from Sinful Environments: A believer does not stop at quitting the drink; they also distance themselves from gatherings where intoxicants are served, out of veneration for God’s boundaries and to protect themselves from the presence of falsehood.

Keenness on Lawful Earning: A believer knows that the price of intoxicants is ill-gotten wealth (Suht). Those who produce, transport, or sell it are distanced from God’s mercy. Therefore, they seek only the wholesome in their food and drink, for a body nourished by the forbidden does not merit the honor of acceptance.

Spiritual and Social Impact: A Society of Rationality and Safety

When the character of integrity regarding intoxicants prevails, magnificent fruits emerge:

Protecting the Family Structure: Intoxicants are the primary enemy of domestic stability. By avoiding them, understanding and mercy prevail, and children are raised by a conscious father and a rational mother, reducing rates of family breakdown and violence.

Lowering Crime and Accident Rates: A society free from intoxicants is a society safe in its streets and homes. Crimes resulting from recklessness and loss of control decrease, and lives and wealth are shielded from harm.

Prosperity of Labor and Production: A conscious mind is the engine of civilization. By avoiding intoxicants, energies are directed toward construction, creativity, and righteous work instead of wasting time and money on what corrupts health and depletes resources.

Spiritual Accountability: “Every Intoxicant is Forbidden”

This branch calls us to evoke the awe of standing before Allah:

Modesty Before Allah: A believer is ashamed that their Lord should see them in a state of unconsciousness or surrender to drunkenness. They are certain that every forbidden drink in this world may deprive them of the “Sealed Nectar” in Paradise.

Compassion for the Self: Remembering the health and social damages brought by intoxicants is part of “God-consciousness” (Taqwa) regarding the body, which is a trust. The believer is their own physician through Sharia and certainty.

Conclusion: Clarity in This World and Bliss in the Hereafter

The branch of avoiding intoxicants is the covenant of “Rationality and Dignity.” It tells us that a human being only ascends through their intellect and is only purified by leaving defilements. Whoever guards their mind from the dust of drunkenness, Allah fills their heart with the light of certainty, making their life secure and stable.

We invite you to reflect on this wise legislation in “Rahmah Dialogue”: How can preserving the mind be a key to every good in society?
