While this is a normal part of human society, it often leads to resentment. When people fail to meet our expectations, we feel used or unappreciated. This happens because our “why” is tied to a human response. The Quran invites us to a higher motive that protects our inner peace.

The Concept of Ikhlas The core of this teaching is Ikhlas. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Ikhlas means “sincerity” or “purity of motive.” It is the act of doing something “purely for the sake of Allah.” When you have Ikhlas, you become like a hidden treasure; your value doesn’t depend on who sees you or who thanks you. You are working for the Rida (pleasure) of the Creator, and because He is ash-Shakur (The Most Appreciative), your reward is always guaranteed.

Freedom from People Living this way leads to a state of Istighna, which the glossary defines as “self-sufficiency” or “independence.” This isn’t about being cold or distant; it’s about being emotionally independent of people’s praise or criticism. If you help someone and they are ungrateful, it doesn’t hurt you, because you weren’t “buying” their gratitude—you were “investing” with your Lord. This mindset creates a deep sense of Sakina (tranquillity).

The Path of Ihsan This level of sincerity is the peak of Ihsan, or “excellence.” The glossary describes Ihsan as worshipping the Creator as if you see Him. When you feel that Presence, the need for human validation disappears. You become a person of Khayr (goodness) who gives naturally, like the sun gives light or the rain gives water, without asking for anything in return.

Let’s Find the Path Together At Dialogue Rahmah, we understand how hard it is to let go of the need for appreciation.
