Only Allah can take you to where you need to be

The Illusion of the Self-Made Path We are taught from a young age that we are the sole architects of our lives. We believe that if we just plan perfectly and work hard enough, we can force our way to any goal. While effort is necessary, this mindset often leads to intense anxiety and a sense of failure when things don’t go as planned. We forget that there are millions of factors beyond our control that determine where we actually end up.

The Concept of Tawfiq In Islam, the “success” that comes from the Divine is called Tawfiq. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Tawfiq refers to “success,” “reconciliation,” or “divine guidance toward achievement.” It is the moment when your effort aligns with the Creator’s will. You can work a hundred hours, but without Tawfiq, the door remains closed. Conversely, with Tawfiq, a small effort can lead to a massive, unexpected opening. Recognizing this keeps us humble when we win and patient when we wait.

Guided by al-Hadi One of the Names of the Creator is al-Hadi, which the glossary defines as “The Provider of Guidance.” We often think we know where we “need” to be—a certain job, a specific status, or a particular city. But al-Hadi knows where we actually belong to grow into our best selves. Sometimes, the path we are forced onto is exactly the one that leads us to the peace we were looking for, even if it wasn’t the one we originally planned.

Finding Peace in the Journey When you accept that only the Creator can take you to your ultimate destination, you experience a shift from stress to Sakina (tranquillity). You still work hard, but you do so with Tawakkul (trust). You realize that your responsibility is the Sa’y (striving), but the result belongs to al-Wali (The Protecting Friend). This freedom allows you to enjoy the journey without being paralyzed by the fear of the “wrong” turn.
