The Hunger for Immediate Answers Our modern culture has conditioned us to expect immediate clarity. When we face a setback or a confusing turn of events, we want to know why right now. When the answer doesn’t come immediately, we feel anxious, angry, or lost. We forget that some of the greatest truths in life are hidden behind the veil of time. Without the ability to wait, we often miss the profound wisdom that a difficult situation was meant to teach us.
The Concept of Sabr At the heart of this lesson is Sabr. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Sabr refers to “patience,” “perseverance,” or “steadfastness.” However, Sabr isn’t just about waiting; it’s about how you wait. It is maintaining your character and your trust in the Divine while you are in the middle of the “not knowing.” The Quran tells us that “Allah is with the patient,” meaning that patience isn’t a lonely state—it is a space where you are closest to the Creator.
The Gift of Hikmah The result of this patient waiting is Hikmah. The glossary defines Hikmah as “wisdom.” In Islamic thought, Hikmah is more than just intelligence; it is the ability to see things as they truly are. Often, the Hikmah behind a trial only reveals itself after the trial has passed. Like a complex tapestry, when you are too close, all you see are tangled threads. Patience allows you to step back and see the beautiful pattern the Creator was weaving all along.
Finding Tranquillity in the Wait When you accept that wisdom requires time, you experience Sakina (tranquillity). You stop demanding that life makes sense on your schedule and start trusting the schedule of al-Hakim (The All-Wise). This shift in perspective transforms your waiting from a period of suffering into a period of growth. You realize that the “delay” was actually a form of Tarbiyah—divine nurturing—preparing your heart for the blessing that is coming next.
