Allah tests everyone, but not in the same way

Why is life so hard?
In the Islamic worldview, a difficult life does not mean you are being punished. It means you are being trained. The Quran teaches that hardship is a guaranteed part of the human experience, designed to build character and spiritual strength. However, the curriculum is different for every student.

The “Why Me?” Trap
When things go wrong, our first reaction is often, “Why is this happening to me?” or “Why does that person have a perfect life while I am suffering?”

The fifth lesson of the Quran answers this directly. It states clearly: “We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and some loss of possessions and lives.” (Quran 2:155).

Notice the variety. One person might be tested with financial ruin (“hunger”), while another is tested with anxiety and insecurity (“fear”). A third might have wealth and safety, but loses a loved one (“loss of lives”). The lesson is that no one escapes the test, but no two tests look exactly the same.

The Solution: Active Fortitude
If the test is inevitable, how do we pass it? The verse ends by promising “good news to the steadfast.”

The Arabic word for this quality is Sabr. While often translated simply as “patience,” the glossary of Islamic terms defines Sabr as fortitude, steadfastness, and endurance.

This is not about passively waiting for the storm to pass. It is about having the spiritual muscle to stay standing when the wind blows. It is the self-control to keep your values intact even when your world is shaking.

Don’t Judge the Struggle
This wisdom teaches us empathy. Just because someone isn’t struggling with money doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling with fear. Just because someone looks happy doesn’t mean they aren’t dealing with loss.

Instead of comparing our hardships to others, we are encouraged to focus on our own fortitude. The test is custom-made for you, not to break you, but to build you.

You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone
Life’s trials can feel overwhelming, and sometimes we just need to vent or ask the big questions about why suffering exists.

At Dialogo con Rahmah, we provide a safe space to discuss these heavy topics. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, loss, or just general confusion about life, we are here to listen.
