In this worldly life, people compete to adorn themselves with clothing, whether it be precious or unique and distinctive. Fashion trends are outlined annually to cater to people’s desire to showcase the latest styles.
However, no matter how elaborate our adornments in this world are, they cannot compare to the splendour and embellishments enjoyed by the inhabitants of paradise, whether they were rich or poor before.
One of the greatest joys in paradise is that its inhabitants will wear luxurious garments made of silk, specifically from Sundus and Istabraq, which are the finest types of silk. Allah mentions in the Quran:
“Verily, the Muttaqun (the pious), will be in place of Security (Paradise); Among Gardens and Springs. Dressed in fine silk and (also) in thick silk, facing each other” (Quran Translation, Surat Ad-Dukhan, 51:53)
This signifies that the clothing of the people of paradise will be made from the finest silk and will be green in colour, the colour of freshness and vitality, resembling the greenery of plants. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once likened the world to something sweet and green, stating that Allah has left you as successors in it to see how you will behave. (Sahih Muslim 2742)
These exquisite, soft garments made of silk and delicate brocade, adorned with the most splendid colours, symbolize the attire of happiness worn by the people of paradise. It represents the completeness of their joy in food, drink, clothing, adornments, and all desires that humans may have wished for in worldly life but might not have been able to attain.
