The Strength of Softness In our modern world, we are often told that “toughness” is the only way to lead or get results. Whether at work or home, many people believe that being firm or even harsh is necessary to earn respect. However, the teachings of the Quran suggest a completely different approach to building strong, influential relationships: the power of gentleness.
The Beauty of Kindness The Prophet Muhammad was described as being incredibly gentle with those around him. This quality is known as Rifq. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Rifq is “gentleness, kindness, and politeness.” It is the opposite of harshness. The tradition teaches that when Rifq is added to anything, it beautifies it, and when it is taken away, it leaves the situation damaged.
Mercy as an Action Another important concept to understand is ラーマ, which means “mercy” or “compassion.” This is actually where our project, Rahmah Dialogue, gets its name. ラーマ is not just a feeling; it is an action. It means choosing to be soft-hearted even when you have the power to be harsh. By showing mercy to others, we reflect a divine quality that draws people closer to us.
Character Over Control When we use gentleness, we create a safe space for others to grow. Instead of making people feel defensive, we invite them to listen. This is the essence of Khuluq, which the glossary defines as “character” or “ethics.” Good character isn’t just about avoiding bad deeds; it’s about the positive way we treat the souls of those around us.
