Why does the end matter?
In Islam, thinking about the end of life is not meant to be morbid; it is meant to be motivating. The Quran teaches that being conscious of the “Last Day”—the Day of Judgment—is the ultimate check on our behavior. It ensures we treat every person fairly, knowing that every action has a consequence.
The Illusion of No Consequences
In the rush of daily life, it is easy to think we can get away with small injustices. We might underpay an employee, gossip about a friend, or ignore a neighbor in need. If no one catches us, we think we are safe.
But living without a sense of ultimate accountability can make us careless. We start living for the moment, rather than living for what matters.
The Ultimate Reality Check
The seventh lesson of the Quran offers a stark reminder: “And guard yourselves against a Day when you will be returned to Allah.” (Quran 2:281).
This is a call to Taqwa—conscious self-protection. By keeping the final destination in mind, we protect ourselves from making bad choices today. We realize that our lives are not random; they are recorded.
Full Justice for Everyone
The lesson continues with a powerful promise: “Then each soul will be rewarded fully for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.”
This is the core of Islamic justice. No one will be shortchanged. No good deed is too small to be counted, and no bad deed is ignored. This belief transforms how a person lives. If you know you will be fully compensated for your kindness, you become more generous. If you know you will be held accountable for your cruelty, you become more gentle.
Living with the End in Mind
Thinking about the Last Day gives perspective to our current struggles. It makes our big problems feel smaller and our small acts of kindness feel bigger. It anchors us in a sense of purpose that goes beyond the temporary ups and downs of life.
