The Myth of Independence<\/strong> Modern culture celebrates the “self-made” person\u2014the individual who needs no one and nothing. But this is a physical and spiritual illusion. A tiny microscopic virus or a single unexpected event can bring the strongest person to their knees. Our “independence” is a thin veil. When we believe we are the masters of our own fate, we carry a crushing weight of anxiety because we know, deep down, how much can go wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Concept of Faqr<\/strong> In Islamic spirituality, the reality of human nature is Faqr<\/strong>. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms<\/em>, Faqr<\/strong> means “poverty” or “utter neediness.” This doesn’t refer to financial poverty, but to the spiritual fact that every breath we take and every beat of our heart is a gift we cannot provide for ourselves. The Quran reminds us: “O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.” Recognizing your Faqr<\/strong> is not a sign of weakness; it is the beginning of true power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Total Reliance: Tawakkul<\/strong> When you accept your dependency, you practice Tawakkul<\/strong>. The glossary defines Tawakkul<\/strong> as “total reliance on Allah.” It is often misunderstood as being passive, but true Tawakkul<\/strong> is described by the Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa as “tying your camel” (doing your absolute best) and then trusting the Creator with the outcome. By being dependent on al-Qayyum<\/strong> (The Self-Sustaining), you become independent of the Khalq<\/strong> (creation). You no longer need to beg for approval or fear the future because your “Source” is infinite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Strength of the Dependent Heart<\/strong> Paradoxically, being totally dependent on the Divine makes you the most resilient person on earth. This state brings a deep sense of Sakina<\/strong> (tranquillity). You are like a mountain; the winds of change may blow, but your foundation is elsewhere. You find Yaqin<\/strong> (certainty) in the face of doubt and Sabr<\/strong> (patience) in the face of delay. You realize that if the Creator is with you, it doesn’t matter who or what is against you. Your dependency is your greatest shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
