When I Was a Christian
There was a dispute between me and a Muslim man that reached the courts. My Muslim neighbours witnessed what happened, so I invited them to testify in court. One of them hesitated, not wanting to testify against his Muslim brother in favour of a Christian. The other convinced him with verses from the Quran and hadiths until he agreed to testify with me.
When I read those verses, I remembered that incident which elevated my view of Islam, the Quran, and Muhammad (peace be upon him), even before I thought about becoming a Muslim.
The verses are from Surah Al-Baqarah:
- (Al-Baqarah: 282): “And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon”
- (Al-Baqarah: 283): “And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it—his heart is indeed sinful”
And the hadith: “Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed.” The companions said, “O Messenger of Allah, we help him when he is oppressed, but how do we support him when he is an oppressor?” He said, “By restraining him or preventing him from committing injustice.” (Reported by Bukhari).
Praise be to Allah for the blessing of Islam and the Quran.
