Through it, faith is built or destroyed; hearts are healed, or discord is ignited. In the “Tree of Faith,” the branch of “Speaking Good or Remaining Silent” represents the “Precision Scale.” It regulates the flow of words so that the believer remains dignified in speech and wise in silence. Islam has made guarding the tongue a condition for the soundness of faith and the servant’s salvation in both worlds.

Speaking good or remaining silent in Islam is not just “social etiquette”; it is an “Act of Worship” and an acknowledgment that every word uttered has a “Vigilant Observer.” A word is a major responsibility for which a person will be held accountable before their Creator.

The Philosophy of Speech and Silence: When to Speak and When to Be Silent?

The Prophet ﷺ established a golden rule that summarizes moral excellence: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” This guidance is built on authentic spiritual pillars:

Speech as an Action: The believer is certain that their speech is part of their deeds. Knowing they will be judged for what they say just as they are judged for what they do, they become cautious, weighing words before releasing them.

The Greatness of the “Good Word”: In Islam, a kind word is Charity (Sadaqah). It opens closed hearts, unites souls, and serves as a reason for rising in ranks before God.

Silence as Dignity and Safety: If a believer finds no good to say, silence becomes the most appropriate worship. It preserves their religion from vanity, their honor from slips, and their society from strife.

The Afflictions of the Tongue and Cautions in Speech

Islam warns against the “harvest of the tongues” that leads people to destruction. Among the most dangerous are:

Backbiting and Gossiping (Ghibah and Namimah): These tear the social fabric and fill hearts with rage. A successful believer purifies their tongue from the flaws of others and focuses on their own.

Lying and Slander: These are the opposites of faith. A believer may be weak or make mistakes, but “they do not lie,” for the tongue is the reflection of the heart’s sincerity.

Vain Talk and Argumentation (Mira’): Meaningless debate that leads to hardness of heart and division. Leaving an argument—even if one is right—is a trait of the wise believer who seeks the peace of hearts.

Spiritual and Social Impact: A Society of Tranquility and Honesty

When the Muslim community adheres to this branch, its ripe fruits appear in every aspect:

Prevalence of Trust and Affection: When people feel safe from one another’s tongues and kind words prevail, grudges vanish and bonds of cooperation grow.

Elevation of Thought and Sobriety: Silence when necessary gives the mind a chance to reflect and contemplate. It makes an individual respected and dignified, speaking only what benefits.

Preserving Sacred Rights: By guarding the tongue, lives, honors, and properties are protected from being violated by a reckless word or a false rumor.

Practical Lessons: How Do We Master Our Tongues?

The branch of “Speaking Good or Silence” calls us to practice “Linguistic Mindfulness” through:

Thinking Before Speaking: Does this speech please God? Does it benefit people? If yes, speak; otherwise, tranquility is better.

Habitual Remembrance (Dhikr): Filling the tongue with the remembrance of God. One who is accustomed to mentioning the Creator will feel too shy to utter what displeases Him.

Avoiding Vain Gatherings: Staying away from assemblies where sanctities are violated or falsehood is discussed, for the listener is a partner to the speaker.

Conclusion: A Person’s Salvation Lies in Guarding the Tongue

The branch of guarding the tongue is the gateway to safety and the path to dignity. It tells us that strength is not in the abundance of speech, but in mastering it and directing it toward what is beneficial. Whoever guards their tongue has held a key to Paradise and is safe from the evils of this world and the next.

We invite you to reflect on this great Prophetic etiquette: How can mastering our words change the quality of our lives and relationships? And how do the values of “Honesty and Wisdom” contribute to building a cohesive Islamic society ruled by justice, affection, and peace?

Introduction: Do You Realize the Weight of a Word in God’s Scale?
