In the “Tree of Faith,” the branch of “Spreading Peace” represents the “Fragrant Scent” that precedes a believer wherever they go, removing the loneliness of estrangement and melting the mountains of alienation. The Prophet ﷺ made the spreading of peace a condition for perfect love, love a path to perfect faith, and faith the gateway to Paradise—making “As-Salamu Alaykum” the first brick in building a compassionate society.

Spreading peace in Islam is a “Declaration of Security.” A true believer is one who grants others safety from their harm the moment they meet, certain that a kind word is the bridge to sound hearts.

The Philosophy of Greeting: “Spread Peace Among Yourselves”

Revelation has formulated a unique method of communication that turns a greeting into an act of worship for which a servant is rewarded. This philosophy rests on firm spiritual pillars:

Planting Affection and Breaking Pride: Initiating peace is a declaration of humility and a rejection of selfishness. A believer initiates peace with those they know and those they do not, breaking the barriers of estrangement and planting the seeds of familiarity.

Supplication for Safety and Mercy: “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah” is not just a phrase; it is a sincere prayer for the other to be protected by God from all evil and enveloped in His mercy. A believer is a “tongue of truth” praying for their brothers to their faces.

The Greeting of the People of Paradise: A believer practices the etiquette of the Hereafter in this world. The angels will receive the believers with: {Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured}. Thus, spreading peace in this life is an evocation of the bliss of Heaven and the blessing of Divine Satisfaction.

Requirements of Character: The Believer’s Etiquette in Spreading Peace

This branch manifests in a believer’s demeanor, making them a harbinger of good in their coming and going:

Initiating and Proclaiming: A believer does not wait for others to start the greeting; they seek the merit of being “the better of the two who starts with peace.” They spread peace in streets, markets, and gatherings, perfuming the air with the remembrance of God and the dissemination of tranquility.

Responding with Better or Equal: In compliance with the Divine command: {When you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]}. A believer increases the warmth; if told “As-Salamu Alaykum,” they add “wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,” ensuring their giving is always more abundant and wholesome.

Greeting the Young and the Old: The believer follows the example of the Prophet ﷺ, who used to greet children to instill dignity and manners within them. Peace is a right for every human, undistinguished by status or wealth, but rather a right of human and spiritual brotherhood.

Spiritual and Social Impact: A Society of Familiarity and Serenity

When the character of spreading peace prevails in the nation, blessed fruits emerge that preserve the cohesion of the social structure:

Dissolving Grudges and Hatred: Peace is the “eraser” that wipes away the resentments of the soul. Many feuds that lasted for ages ended with a sincere “As-Salamu Alaykum,” returning waters to their natural course and reuniting the ranks.

Spreading Security and Reassurance: When peace is widespread, people feel they are among brothers who wish them well, reducing suspicion and tension, and making public spaces safe environments overflowing with affection.

Promoting a Culture of Mercy: Spreading peace constantly reminds people that the basis of their relationship is “Peace” and “Mercy,” which reflects on their financial and social dealings, allowing a spirit of tolerance and ease to prevail.

Spiritual Accountability: “A Greeting from Allah, Blessed and Good”

This branch calls us to examine our intentions when offering a greeting:

Sincerity and Purity of Inner Self: Peace should stem from a heart that loves good for people, not out of flattery or affectation, but in obedience to God’s command and seeking His pleasure.

Venerating the Symbols of Islam: A believer takes pride in their Islamic greeting, seeing it as a distinction and a Prophetic guidance that links them to the history of their nation and places them on the path of the righteous.

Conclusion: Sowing Peace and Harvesting Harmony

The branch of spreading peace is the key to social happiness in Islam. It tells us that the greatest bonds begin with a kind word and a blessed prayer. Whoever makes peace their habit will find their life wholesome and their memory honorable, and they will be among those told in the Hereafter: {Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein}.

We invite you to reflect on this refined etiquette in “Rahmah Dialogue”: How can the word “Peace” open the gates of Paradise and build bridges of love? And how do the values of “Proclaiming and Welcoming” contribute to building a cohesive Islamic society ruled by justice, affection, and peace?

Introduction: Do You Carry Peace in Your Words Before Your Hands?
