The Fragility of Social Status<\/strong> In the age of social media and hyper-competition, we are conditioned to believe that our “honor” is something others give us. We think if we have the right job, the right connections, or enough followers, we are finally “someone.” But anything the world gives you, the world can take away. When we seek validation from people, we become slaves to their whims, constantly performing to stay relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Concept of ‘Izzah<\/strong> In Islamic terminology, true honor and dignity is called ‘Izzah<\/strong>. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms<\/em>, ‘Izzah<\/strong> is the “might,” “honor,” or “power” that comes from being connected to the Source of all power. The Quran explicitly states: “Whoever desires honor\u2014then to Allah belongs all honor.” When you realize that your value is inherently given to you by al-Aziz<\/strong> (The Almighty), you stop begging for it from people who are just as limited as you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Illusion of the “Win”<\/strong> Sometimes, people “win” by compromising their values, lying, or stepping on others to reach the top. In the eyes of society, they are successful. But Islam teaches that this is a hollow victory. If you seek honor through Ma’siyah<\/strong> (disobedience) or by abandoning your principles, the result is eventually Dhul<\/strong> (humiliation). Even if you are surrounded by applause, you feel a deep, internal sense of shame. You have won the “game” but lost your Muru’ah<\/strong> (manliness\/honor\/humanity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding Freedom in the Truth<\/strong> Basing your honor on your relationship with the Divine brings a profound sense of Sakina<\/strong> (tranquillity). You are finally free. You can be kind without being a people-pleaser; you can be successful without being arrogant. You become Ghani<\/strong> (self-sufficient) through the One who is truly Self-Sufficient. This internal honor makes you unshakable; because the world didn’t give you your dignity, the world cannot take it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
