Sincerity of Intention: Detachment from War Booty and Perfect Asceticism

37 عدم التلهف على غنائم الحرب بأنواعها

Introduction: Do You Fight to Uphold the Truth or to Collect Debris?

In the hours of victory, when wealth and gains fall into one’s hands, the true mettle of men is tested. While some souls long for the fleeting wreckage of this world, the hearts of sincere believers look only toward the pleasure of God. In the “Tree of Faith,” the branch of “Detachment from War Booty” represents “Steadfastness during Tribulation.” It ensures that struggle (Jihad) remains a sacred act of worship and does not transform into a pursuit of material greed. Islam has made sincerity of purpose a condition for the acceptance of deeds, warning against making money the driver for a believer’s sword.

Detachment from booty in Islam is the “Jurisprudence of Dignity.” A true believer sees the victory of their faith as the greatest prize and refuses to be a slave to a dirham or a dinar gained on the battlefield.

The Philosophy of Sincerity: “That the Word of God Be Supreme”

The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a man who fights for booty, a man who fights for fame, and a man who fights to show off his status—which of them is in the cause of God? He replied: “He who fights so that the word of Allah be supreme is in the cause of Allah.” This principle rests on authentic spiritual pillars:

  1. Purifying the Intent: Struggle in Islam is the “peak of the matter,” and God accepts nothing from it except what is purely for His sake. Longing for spoils mars the sincerity of trust in God and turns worship into a temporary worldly trade.
  2. Warning Against Embezzlement (Ghulul): Ghulul (taking from the booty secretly before its distribution) is a major sin. It is a betrayal of God, His Messenger, and the community of believers; it is a fire that consumes its owner in their grave before the Hereafter.
  3. Contentment with Distribution: A believer trusts in God’s justice and waits until the spoils are distributed according to the Divine scale. They do not eye the gains with greed nor scramble for them with their hands.

Manifestations of Asceticism and Detachment: The Hero’s Firmness

This branch manifests in the conduct of a believing fighter, making them a model of integrity and transcendence:

  • Advancing Without Greed: The believer rushes toward the defense of truth seeking one of the “two best things” (victory or martyrdom). They do not look back to see the wealth left behind by opponents, which makes them more courageous and steadfast in the field.
  • Integrity in Collection: Once the battle ends, the believer is the first to hand over any found spoils to the leadership for just distribution, rising above theft and staying clear of the forbidden.
  • Asceticism After Conquest: Following the example of the early generations who conquered treasures and nations yet changed nothing in their humble lifestyles. They remained examples of simplicity, fearing that their “good things” might be exhausted in this worldly life.

Spiritual and Social Impact: A Society of Selflessness and Elevation

When the value of detachment from spoils prevails, magnificent gains are achieved for the community:

  • Preserving the Nation’s Dignity: An army that does not lust after spoils is an invincible army because its goal is higher than matter and its principles are stronger than temptation.
  • Unity of Rank and Purity of Hearts: Competing for money breeds hatred and malice, while detachment unites hearts on a single goal, making fighters brothers who prefer one another over themselves.
  • Integrity in Public Trusts: This character trains the individual in “Absolute Integrity” regarding public funds. He who does not lust after the spoils of war will find it impossible to extend his hand to a bribe or embezzlement during times of peace.

Spiritual Accountability: “Actions are by Intentions”

This branch calls us to scrutinize our motives in every deed we perform:

  • Monitoring the Heart: Do we work to gain praise and rewards, or to benefit people and please the Creator?
  • Asceticism in Status and Wealth: Training the soul that true giving is what is done in secret, and true reward is what God has stored for us in the Abode of Permanence.

Conclusion: A Pure Victory

The branch of detachment from war booty is a cry against material greed. It tells us that true victory is the victory of a human over their own whims. Whoever strives for God sincerely, God opens for them the blessings of the earth and gives them in the Hereafter what no eye has seen and no ear has heard.

We invite you to reflect on this moral elevation: How can detachment from worldly gains build a society based on sacrifice and sincerity? And how do the values of “Integrity and Asceticism” contribute to building a cohesive Islamic society ruled by justice, affection, and peace?
