In the “Tree of Faith,” the branch of “Not Undercutting the Sale of a Fellow Muslim” represents the “Fruit that Protects its Neighbor.” It prevents the violation of others’ rights during the moments of agreement. Islam considers spoiling a deal that is near completion a form of injustice that breeds malice, warning against it so that society remains interconnected—not devouring one another for a dirham or a dinar.

Refraining from interfering in the deals of others is an “Act of Faith in Divine Provision.” A true believer refuses to take a livelihood that God steered toward his brother by tempting the buyer with a lower price or different goods just to spoil the first sale.

The Philosophy of the Prohibition: “None of You Should Sell Over the Sale of Another”

The Prophet ﷺ established the rule of security in transactions to protect hearts before pockets. This prohibition rests on firm spiritual pillars:

Preserving Spiritual Affection: Undercutting a brother’s sale (by saying to a buyer: “Cancel this deal and I will sell you better”) generates hatred and resentment. Islam places “Soundness of the Heart” above all material gain.

Stability of Rights and Contracts: When people know their deals are protected from malicious interference, trust prevails, the market stabilizes, and every merchant focuses on seeking their own provision without spying on their neighbor’s transactions.

Warning Against the Erasing of Blessing: Gain achieved by “spoiling” the rights of others is stripped of blessing. A believer is certain that wealth attained by harming a fellow Muslim contains neither goodness nor growth.

Requirements of Integrity: The Character of the Believing Merchant

This branch manifests in a believer’s conduct, making their trade a means to attain Divine pleasure:

Stopping at Contentment: If a believer sees that a seller and buyer have reached an agreement on a price, they refrain from intervening with a new offer. They leave the commodity to its first claimant, asking God for blessings for them and a beautiful compensation for himself.

Respecting Proposals and Covenants: This character extends to include “Not proposing [marriage] over the proposal of one’s brother.” A believer does not compete with his brother in a matter where the brother has already preceded him and gained acceptance, out of respect for feelings and the sanctity of honor.

Competition through Excellence, Not Sabotage: A believer competes in quality, honesty, and general reputation, but does not interfere “specifically” in a particular deal to spoil it for both parties, rising above meanness and adhering to gallantry.

Spiritual and Social Impact: A Society of Contentment and Selflessness

When this character prevails in markets and societies, magnificent gains are achieved:

Quelling Fitna and Disputes: The causes of conflict that arise due to “snatching deals” vanish, replaced by brotherhood, and God blesses the provision of all.

Consolidating the Principle of “Guaranteed Provision”: This branch trains the believer in total contentment; what was meant for you, God will drive toward you without the need to harm others.

The Prestige of the Muslim Merchant: A merchant committed to this character is known for dignity and elevation, attracting people’s trust and respect—a “good reputation” that is an inexhaustible capital.

Spiritual Accountability: “Love for Your Brother What You Love for Yourself”

This branch calls us to examine our consciences in our daily dealings:

Avoiding Greedy Selfishness: A believer does not see himself alone in the field; he sees his brothers and seeks their success as he seeks his own.

Honesty with Oneself: Realizing that interfering in the deals of others is a “hidden betrayal” of trust and that God is observant of the intentions behind every bid and offer.

Conclusion: Wholesome Provision and a Sound Heart

The branch of not undercutting a fellow Muslim’s sale is a cry against modern material greed. It tells us that the beauty of profit lies in the purity of the means. Whoever leaves an opportunity for his brother to profit in compliance with God’s command, God opens for them doors of provision and tranquility that they never imagined.

We invite you to reflect on this refinement in transactions: How can respecting the deals of others build a secure market and loving hearts? And how do the values of “Integrity and Contentment” contribute to building a cohesive Islamic society ruled by justice, affection, and peace?

Introduction: Is Your Profit Built on the Ruins of Your Brother’s Deal?
