His Lordship demands loyalty from you

The Meaning of Sovereignty We like to think of ourselves as completely independent. But in reality, we are always serving something—whether it’s our career, our public image, or our cravings. Islam invites us to realize that we have a Creator who provides everything we have. Aconciliating this relationship requires a shift in our priorities. If He is the “Lord,” then He deserves our primary loyalty.

The Concept of Rububiyyah The foundation of this lesson is Rububiyyah. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, this refers to the “Lordship” of Allah. It means recognizing Him as the Creator, Sustainer, and Nourisher of everything. When you acknowledge someone as Rabb (Lord), you are admitting that they have the right to guide you. Loyalty to the Rabb means choosing His values over your own convenience.

Loyalty as a Covenant In Islam, our relationship with the Divine is seen as a Mithaq, or a “covenant/solemn bond.” The glossary describes this as a sacred agreement between the soul and its Creator. True loyalty means staying true to that bond even when it’s difficult. This is the essence of Sidq (truthfulness/sincerity). Being loyal to your Lord means being a person of your word—standing up for justice (‘Adl) and truth (Haqq) even when the world is pulling you in the opposite direction.

The Freedom of One Master It might sound restrictive to talk about “demanding loyalty,” but it is actually the ultimate form of freedom. When you are loyal to the Lord of the Universe, you no longer have to be a slave to a thousand different masters. You don’t have to please everyone, follow every trend, or fear every critic. This singular focus brings a deep sense of Sakina (tranquillity). You know who you belong to, and that clarity gives you a strength that nothing in the Dunya (world) can take away.
