This “religious superiority complex” is something the Quran warns against very clearly. Being close to the Divine should make a person feel smaller and more humble, not larger and more important than their neighbor.

The Reality of Guidance In Islam, the state of being guided is called Huda. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Huda is “guidance” from the Creator. The crucial lesson here is that guidance is a gift, not something a person “earns” through their own cleverness. Because it is a gift, there is no room for pride. If you see someone who is struggling, the proper response in Islam is Dua (supplication/prayer) for them, not judgment against them.

Judging the Heart Only the Creator knows the true state of a person’s heart, which is known as the Qalb. The glossary describes the Qalb as the “heart” or the seat of spiritual awareness. A person might look “religious” on the outside but have a heart full of Kibr (arrogance). Conversely, someone who seems far from religion might have a sincerity that is beloved to the Divine. Because we cannot see the Qalb, we are forbidden from acting superior to anyone.

Unity in Humanity We are all born with the same Fitra, or natural human disposition. We all share a common origin and a common destination. The purpose of faith is to refine our Khuluq (character) so that we treat every soul with respect. When a person thinks they are “saved” while others are “lost,” they risk losing the very humility that faith is supposed to build.

Let’s Find the Path Together At 拉赫马对话, we believe that no one has a monopoly on a good heart. We offer a space where everyone is respected, regardless of where they are on their spiritual journey.

Have you ever felt judged by religious people, or do you have questions about how Islam views other faiths? We invite you to a free, private dialogue with a Muslim expert.
