The saddest thing about being duped by this world is that it does not fulfil you

The Mirage of Materialism We are constantly surrounded by messages telling us that the “good life” is found in the next upgrade. We chase after wealth, status, and pleasure, believing they will finally make us feel complete. But this world—Dunya—is like salt water; the more you drink of it, the thirstier you become. The sadness isn’t just in the chasing, but in the realization that the world simply isn’t designed to be our source of ultimate happiness.

The Nature of the Dunya In Islamic terminology, the word Dunya refers to the “lower” or “immediate” world. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, the Dunya is the temporary life we lead on earth before the Hereafter. The Quran warns that this life is a “deception” (Ghurur). It’s not that the world is inherently evil, but rather that it is fragile and fleeting. When we treat the Dunya as our main goal, we are effectively trying to build a castle on top of a wave.

The Hungry Soul The reason the world cannot fulfill us is because the human soul, or Ruh, is not from this world. The glossary defines the Ruh as the “spirit” or “soul” breathed into us by the Creator. Because the soul comes from a divine source, it can only be satisfied by a divine connection. Trying to feed the soul with material things is like trying to feed a fire with shadows. True fulfillment comes from Iman (faith) and the pursuit of Akhira (the Hereafter).

Re-centering Your Focus Shifting your focus doesn’t mean you have to leave the world or live in poverty. It means practicing Zuhd, which the glossary defines as “asceticism” or “detachment.” True Zuhd is not about having nothing in your hand, but about having nothing in your heart except the Creator. When the world is in your hand, you use it to do good; when it’s not in your heart, its presence or absence doesn’t destroy your peace (Sakina).
