According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Himmah refers to “ambition,” “resolve,” or “high determination.” Having “High Himmah” means you don’t settle for mediocrity. Whether you want to be a scientist, an artist, a parent, or an entrepreneur, you are encouraged to pursue that path with the intention of Ihsan (excellence). When your ambition is fueled by a desire to serve a higher purpose, your hard work is counted as ‘Ibada (worship).

The Concept of Khilafah This drive to achieve is rooted in the concept of Khilafah. The glossary defines a Khalifa as a “vicegerent” or a “steward” on earth. This means we have a responsibility to improve the world around us. Chasing a dream that solves a problem, creates beauty, or provides for your family is a way of fulfilling your role as a steward. Your success is a tool that can be used to spread ラーマ (mercy) and justice.

Relying on the Source of Strength The secret to not burning out while chasing your dreams is Tawakkul (trust in the Creator). You do your absolute best—utilizing every resource and talent you have—and then you leave the results to al-Qadir (The All-Powerful). This prevents your dreams from becoming a source of anxiety. If you succeed, you are grateful (Shakir); if you face a setback, you are patient (Sabir), knowing that your effort was never wasted in the eyes of the Divine.
