The Search for Identity Many of us feel a sense of “identity crisis.” We look for our value in our nationality, our profession, or our social status, yet we often feel hollow. We try to adopt the values of whatever culture is most powerful at the moment, hoping to gain some of their prestige. But true honor isn’t something you borrow from others; it’s something that grows from a solid foundation of truth.
The Concept of ‘Izzah through the Word The Quran is often referred to as a “Reminder” (Dhikr) that contains our honor. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, the Quran is the speech of al-Malik (The King/The Sovereign). When a person carries the Quran in their heart and lives by its principles, they are bestowed with ‘Izzah (honor/dignity). The early generations of Muslims were transformed from wandering tribes into global leaders not through wealth, but through the intellectual and moral strength the Quran provided.
A Universal Standard The honor provided by the Quran is universal. It doesn’t matter your race, your gender, or your economic background. In the eyes of the Creator, “the most noble of you is the most mindful of Him (Atqakum).” This shifts the basis of honor from things we cannot control (like where we were born) to things we can (like our character and our connection to the Divine). It gives a voice to the voiceless and a sense of pride to those the world has marginalized.
The Peace of the Noble Soul Living with the Quran as your source of honor brings a profound sense of Sakina (tranquillity). You no longer feel the need to “prove” yourself to anyone. You are anchored in the Haqq (Truth). Whether the world treats you with respect or not, you know that you are a carrier of a divine message, and that in itself is the highest honor possible. This realization makes you Thabit (steadfast)—you don’t waver when values change because your foundation is eternal.
