When you have the upper hand, that’s when it’s hardest to show taqwa

The Test of Authority

Most people believe that the biggest test in life is poverty or weakness. While those are certainly difficult, many spiritual traditions teach that having power is an even greater challenge. When you are the boss, the parent, or the person with the most influence in a room, it is very easy to let your ego take over. The Quran reminds us that these moments are when we must be the most careful.

The Concept of Taqwa

The key to handling power correctly is Taqwa. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Taqwa is “awe or fear of Allah,” which leads a person to be “on guard.” When you have the upper hand over someone else, Taqwa acts as an internal brake. It reminds you that even if you have power over another person, there is a Higher Power over you. It keeps you from becoming a Zalim—an oppressor or wrongdoer.

Strength Through Self-Control

In Islam, a “strong” person is not someone who can defeat others. Instead, strength is defined by self-control. This is related to the term Jihad an-Nafs, which the glossary defines as the “struggle against the self.” When you have the opportunity to take advantage of someone but you choose to be fair instead, you have won the greatest internal battle. You have chosen Haqq (truth and right) over your own pride.

Accountability to the Creator

Every position of authority is considered an Amana, or a “trust.” You do not “own” your power; you are borrowing it. One day, everyone will be asked how they treated those who were weaker than them. This belief ensures that a person with faith remains humble, knowing that their Ma’ad (place of return or the Hereafter) depends on their behavior today.
