The Exhaustion of Seeking External Security We live in a constant state of “needing.” We need people to like us, we need our bank accounts to be full, and we need our plans to go exactly as intended. We believe that if we lose any of these things, we will be destroyed. This dependency on the temporary world makes us fragile. When our “sources” of happiness fail us—as they eventually do—we feel lost and abandoned.
The Concept of Kifayah In Islamic spirituality, the sufficiency of the Divine is known as Kifayah. According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, this refers to the Creator being “Enough” for His servants. The Quran asks the profound question: “Is not Allah sufficient for His servant?” When we answer “yes” with our hearts, we move from a state of desperation to a state of Ghani (inner wealth/self-sufficiency). You realize that while you use worldly means, your actual reliance is on al-Kafi (The Sufficient One).
The Power of Hasbunallah One of the most famous phrases in the Quran is “Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal-wakil” (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs). This was the statement made by the Prophets when they faced their greatest trials. It is a declaration of Tawakkul (complete reliance). It means that even if you have nothing else, if you have your connection to the Divine, you have everything you need to survive and thrive. This isn’t about giving up on effort; it’s about giving up on the anxiety over results.
The Freedom of the Sufficient Heart Living with the realization that Allah is enough brings a deep sense of Sakina (tranquillity). You are finally liberated from the “people-pleasing” trap. You can be generous because you don’t fear poverty; you can be brave because you don’t fear rejection. Your worth is no longer tied to things that fluctuate. This mindset gives you a legendary kind of Thabat (steadfastness). You are at peace because you are anchored in the only Power that never changes and never leaves.
