Do not give up despite disappointments

The Sting of Unmet Expectations

Disappointment is one of the hardest emotions to navigate because it usually follows a period of vulnerability and hope. Whether it’s a job you didn’t get, a relationship that ended, or a personal goal that remains out of reach, the pain comes from the gap between what we wanted and what actually happened. It’s easy to let that pain turn into cynicism, making us afraid to ever hope or try again.

The Concept of Qadar and Rida

The antidote to the paralysis of disappointment is the belief in Qadar (Divine Decree). According to the Glossary of Islamic Terms, Qadar is the belief that everything happens according to the knowledge and will of the Creator. When we hit a dead end, we practice Rida (contentment). This doesn’t mean we don’t feel the sting; it means we trust that al-Hakim (The All-Wise) has a reason for the “no” that we cannot yet see. The Quran reminds us: “Perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you.”

Patience as a Process: Sabr

Giving up is the easy way out, but staying the course is Sabr. The glossary defines Sabr as “steadfastness” and “perseverance.” It is the muscle that grows every time you choose to keep going despite a setback. The Prophets faced constant disappointments from their people and their circumstances, yet they never gave up because their hope was anchored in al-Fattah (The Opener). They understood that a disappointment in the Dunya (world) is often a setup for a breakthrough in the Akhira (hereafter) or a better path in this life.

The Peace of the Trusting Heart

Choosing not to give up brings a profound sense of Sakina (tranquillity). You move from a state of “why is this happening to me?” to “what is this teaching me?” This shift removes the bitterness of disappointment and replaces it with Yaqin (certainty). You become Thabit (steadfast) because your success is no longer defined by specific worldly outcomes, but by your loyalty to the journey. You find peace in knowing that as long as you are trying for the sake of al-Haqq (The Truth), you can never truly lose.
