The Shadow Version of You We often spend so much time building our “external self”—our career, our social media image, and our social status—that we lose touch with our “internal self.” We become experts at what we do, but strangers to who we are. When we live only for the moment or for the approval of others, we begin to act in ways that don’t align with our values. This disconnect creates a “shadow version” of ourselves that is constantly busy but never truly fulfilled.
The Concept of Nasyan al-Nafs The Quran points out a profound psychological truth: “And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves.” In the Glossary of Islamic Terms, this state is linked to Ghaflah (heedlessness). When a person disconnects from al-Haqq (The Truth), they lose their moral and spiritual compass. You start to “forget” your purpose, your ultimate destination, and even what truly makes your heart find Sakina (tranquillity). You become a passenger in your own life, driven by impulses rather than intention.
The Mirror of the Divine In Islamic spirituality, knowing yourself is the key to knowing your Creator. When you turn back to al-Khaliq, you are actually turning back to your Fitra (innate nature). It’s like looking into a mirror that has been cleaned of dust. Suddenly, you remember what you stand for, what your boundaries are, and what your soul truly needs to thrive. This self-remembrance isn’t about ego; it’s about Muru’ah (honor and integrity). It’s about being “present” in your own life again.
The Peace of Self-Alignment Returning to yourself through the remembrance of the Divine brings an immediate sense of Sakina. You no longer feel the need to “fake it” or follow the crowd. You find Yaqin (certainty) in your identity. This alignment makes you Thabit (steadfast); because you know who you are in relation to your Creator, you aren’t easily shaken by the opinions or the trends of the world. You move from a state of fragmentation to a state of Tawhid (oneness and integrity) within your own heart.
